Parents of 330 kids die of drug abuse every year

A new report on substance abuse in Scotland has stated that many children get to lose a parent due to drug abuse every year.

In 2011, drugs took away parent or a parental figure from 331 children. The earlier figure was 238 and this shows a sharp incline. About 50 per cent of drug related deaths happened due to Heroin substitute methadone in Scotland.

These reports reflect a reduced life expectancy of addicts who resorted to heroin in the 1980s.

Heroine addicts are prescribed methadone to get off Heroine. But Methadone has been the reason for several deaths.

Samsung, Intel, Telefónica invest in speech analysis startup Expert Labs

An IDC News report has revealed that Samsung, Intel, and Telefonica have invested in San Francisco-based startup Expect Labs which specializes in speech analysis. The startup, headed by CEO Timothy Tuttle, currently has 12 employees; and has already received $2.4 million in funding from existing investors, which include Google, Greylock Partners, and Bessemer Ventures, among others.

Bloomberg: Microsoft’s Azure revenue surpassed ‘$1 billion’ over the past year

According to a Bloomberg report, the revenue which Microsoft earned from its Azure cloud infrastructure services surpassed the $1-billion mark, for the first time, in the last one year; with the past six months having witnessed a 48 percent increase in Azure subscriptions.

Health meeting to address public questions

A public meeting is being held by the Governing Body of the Eastbourne, Hailsham and Seaford Clinical Commissioning Group, CCG, in Seaford.

The meeting is being planned on May 8 at about 12.30pm at St Leonard's Church hall, Church Street.

On April 1, GPs in 22 practices, had gathered at the Eastbourne, Hailsham and Seaford Clinical CCG. The aim of getting together was purchasing health services for about 180,000 people with a budget of £231 million.

EA confirms another round of layoffs

In a move which apparently marks Electronic Arts' (EA) ongoing attempts in the direction of corporate reorganization, the game publisher said in Thursday statement that laying off some more of its employees. Though EA has not confirmed the exact number of employees to be affected by the latest round of job-cuts, it is being estimated that the company will layoff nearly 10 percent of its workforce.

Celebrity chef recipes don’t do good to health

It has been reported that TV chefs are increasing the obesity epidemic by asking people to consume dishes that are loaded with fat.

The government's healthy eating recommendations were outrightly avoided by 87 per cent of recipes belonging to 26 famous cooks who were renowned. For this, experts tested 900 recipes.

Ingredients that led to a healthy diet were recommended by just 13 per cent of cooks and followed guidelines devised by the Government's Food Standards Agency.

National MMR vaccination campaign needed

It surfaced recently that the government has stockpiled thousands of MMR vaccines to enable anyone who has not had the jab get immunised.

About this, MPs were told by health secretary Jeremy Hunt that a 'national plan' was made following an epidemic in Swansea as measles cases have gone upto 886 in the area.

He said, "I want to reassure you we are taking this extremely seriously. In terms of making sure we have sufficient numbers of vaccines, ensure that we are talking in a targeted way to communities and to schools, that's absolutely going on."

Urban dwellers feel better after staying in green spaces

According to the University of Exeter, the overall wellbeing of people can be improved majorly by parks, gardens and green space in urban areas.

Over 17 years, a data from 5000 UK households was used that concluded greener expanses to have a positive effect on people.

They added that urban planners and society can have a huge impact following these claims.

The study is published in the journal Psychological Science.
