Verizon Communications’ Q1 2013 earnings increased 16%

Reporting its 2013 first-quarter results on Thursday, Verizon Communications said that its quarterly earnings increased 16 percent; with the company's margins witnessing a notably improvement due to the addition of pre-paid wireless subscribers.

According to the figures reported by Verizon, there was a 15.8 percent increase, to $1.95 billion, in the company net income during the first quarter, in which the bigwig telecom company not only added more wireless subscribers, but also saw a steady growth in its FiOS pay-TV and broadband business.

300 per cent rise in deceased organ donation

In the past five years, there has been a 300 per cent rise in the number of organs donated by people after dying at Nottingham's hospitals.

In 2012 and 2013, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS trust has recorded a total of 17 deceased donors. This number has been the highest in the East Midlands. This has led to UK witnessing 40 people being benefitted from organ donation. In the year 2007 and 2008, this number was just four.

Disneyland temporarily shuts down three rides after safety citation

The Los Angeles Times said in a recent report that a safety citation received by the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim on Saturday led to the temporary closure of three popular rides - Space Mountain, the Matterhorn and Soarin' Over California.

According to the report, the shutting down of the three rides was part of a voluntary closure by the Disneyland Resort officials, after the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) issued seven citations to the park on Friday.

Hospital's wards face visiting restriction due to Norovirus

Following outbreaks of the Norovirus, four wards in Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton has visiting restrictions.

In order to keep the bug under control, public's help is being asked for by the hospital.

Musgrove's medical director, Colin Close said, "Norovirus is a nasty infection, causing acute diarrhoea and vomiting. On top of that, it's highly contagious. For example, you can fit around 10,000 Norovirus particles on a pin head but you only need to ingest about 10 particles to become infected."

According to a new study released by Piper Jaffray, the usage of Facebook has come down among the teenagers, even though the social network still continue to be an important communications platform for them.

With the findings of the study pointing out that teenagers are drifting from Facebook - as also from Google's popular video-sharing site YouTube -, the statistics released by the study showed that there has been a 9 percent fall in Facebook usage among teenagers since last year.

Wired: Apple to pay $53m to settle lawsuit involving iPhone and iPod Touch warranties

A new Wired report has revealed, on the basis of an agreement obtained by it, that Apple has apparently worked out a settlement in a 2010-filed class action lawsuit which accused the company of failing to honor its warranties on the iPhone and the iPod Touch.

According to Wired, Apple will settle the lawsuit - which involved Apple vs. user warranty disputes - by paying an amount of $53 million. The settlement, which is not yet final though it is assumed to be the real deal, is expected to be filed in a San Francisco federal court in the coming weeks.

Chrysler recalling 9,300 model year 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 due to rollaway risk

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Auburn Hills-based automaker Chrysler is recalling nearly 9,300 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup trucks of model year 2013, because the defective parking brakes of the trucks can pose a potential risk of a rollaway of the vehicles.

About the fault in the parking brakes of the Dodge Ram 1500 trucks being recalled, Chrysler said in a Tuesday statement that the parking brake equalizer in the affected trucks has apparently not been adjusted correctly.

A New Levy in Northern Ireland to Charge Five-Pence on Carrier Bags

Northern Island has levied a tax on carrier bags that would have shoppers to pay five pence for a carrier bag. The Department of the Environment hopes that the levy would bring down the use of carrier bags by 80%.

The tax is also for the carrier bags made up of paper, plants-based material, or natural starch. The British Retail Consortium's Aodhan Connolly said that it seems that there are few consumers who are not yet ready for it. Connolly added that the biggest concern is that there would be confusion and conflicts at the tills.

The real thing is not felt due to the textures of chocolate preparations despite low-fat preparations of chocolate being well known.

A method was described by an American Chemical Society that made little sponges to displace fat by using the popular gelling agent agar.

Stefan Bon stated that when alcohol was used with the chocolates, they were like `tiny vodka jellies'.

Fisker Automotive fires nearly 75% of its workforce

After grapping with financial problems for months, high-end electric car maker Fisker Automotive revealed in a Friday statement that it plans to lay off 75 percent of its workforce; a move which results from the company's failure to strike an agreement with an automotive partner to fund operations.

About its decision to slash nearly 75 percent of jobs at the company, Fisker said in an emailed statement on Friday that it had informed a "core group of employees in Southern California" about the job-cut move; and added that it expects only around 25 percent of workers to stay.
