Yet another event where human, got replaced by high-tech robots. In University of California at San Francisco Medical Center, robots are being used to hand out medicines from the hospital pharmacy.
Generally, use of robot is seen as a step to cost cutting in the workplace, but According to UCSF, robots are being used to improve efficiency and ensure zero-error in medicine delivery to patients. This unique step has been working out very well, as so far 350,000 doses of oral and jab shots has been prepared and handled by the robots, and not a single error has cropped up.
The three RIVA robots are created by Intelligent Hospital Systems and are more than capable of handling dispensing procedure of separating pills, liquid medication, IV syringes and bags for individual doses, as well as their packaging and storage. After these stages, the medicines are clipped together for a period of 12hour on a plastic ring, and bar coded.
UCSF physicians electronically maintain the whole system, which helps them in dispensing the appropriate medications. An automated inventory system is used to keep a tab on the medicine stocks. The robots have managed to reduce medicine contamination as they work in a secure and sterile environment.
