Study to tackle the deteriorating dental health of children

There will be a survey of oral health of 32,000 Australian children. This will include the children from age 5 to 14. The main aim of survey is to find out the reasons for why $1 billion spent by governments on dental programs each year appears to have little effect.

The recent data has shown that the more children below 14 are admitted to hospital for teeth extractions or dental work than for any other cause. This has been increased from the last data of 2006.

In the year 2006, about 27,000 children were admitted in the hospital. Out of them 8114 children were under five.

According to John Spencer, from the Adelaide University-based Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health, children's teeth had been weakening since the 1990s. The reason for this problem was changes in the dietary and lower consumption of flouridated water.

Professor Spencer has said that the excessive use of rainwater tanks, the increased use of filtered water and the increase in bottled water. And the most common reason was the less tooth-brushing frequency done by the children.
