US researchers have proposed that curry contains specific elements that can help fight infectious diseases. It has been subjected that curcumin found in turmeric, which is spice, majorly used in South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine, can help prevent infection.

It has been termed that turmeric has been vastly used in India's traditional Ayurvedic remedies for 2,500 years.

However, this recent discovery of curcumin ingredient by American and Danish scientists is stated to a key ingredient in raising levels of a protein termed CAMP. It has been notified that this protein helps strengthen the body’s immune system to fight against bacteria, viruses and fungi.

The researchers have termed this protein as a biological antimicrobial in humans, which serves as first line defense during initial attack by microbes leading to infection. It has been pointed out that CAMP can fight against a broad spectrum of bacteria, including those causing tuberculosis and sepsis.

Adrian Gombart, an Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the Linus Pauling Institute in Corvallis, Ore, said, “This research points to a new avenue for regulating CAMP gene expression. It's interesting and somewhat surprising that curcumin can do that, and could provide another tool to develop medical therapies”.
