Change in Lifestyle to Affect Dementia

The researchers although do not yet know what causes dementia, however, they have been doing their part, guessing that a history of depression, education level, diet and heart diseases could be some of the reasons leading to dementia.

A research has been carried out for seven successive years involving 1,433 people over the age of 65. All the information was taken down including information about alcohol consumption, medication use, education, weight, caffeine intake, diet, height and overall health.

The participants were then tested for dementia after two, four and seven years.

The result was, as said by UK Alzheimer's Society, "Effective prevention of diabetes, depression and heart disease could potentially improve the lives of millions of people affected by this cruel condition".

The researchers remarked that eradicating diabetes could decrease the risk of dementia by 5%. Similarly, the affect of diet was by 21%, with the rate of depression affecting it by 10%.

If people would be better educated, in other words, awareness could also lessen the rate of dementia by almost 18%.

A second study involved 135,000 people in the U. K. of and above the age of 60. After diagnosis, it was found that mortality rate was threefold for people suffering from dementia in comparison to the others.
