65,000 Cubic Meters Water to Be Drained from French Alps Glacier

Researchers of National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) had found a water pocket in the Tete-Rousse glacier last month. Because of this, lives of more than 3,000 residents in the French Alpine valley are on stake, as per authorities. It is being warned that the water that is trapped inside a glacier on Mont Blanc can burst any time. To avoid this, workers have now begun to drain this pocket of 65,000 cubic meters water.

Five to 10 workers have been employed in the area, to empty the pocket with the help of specially drilled holes over the glacier. This will help drain about 150 cubic meters of water per hour from the pocket and it will be released in some glacier, but at a slow pace.

“With the start of pumping, the water pressure will be much smaller and therefore the risk of it bursting and flooding would be greatly diminished”, said Nicolas Carre, the Site Supervisor.

This amount of water can actually fill 20 Olympic pools. Therefore, it can also pose a great flood over the nearby areas, which is also a good holiday spot for many. It is not the first time that a flood from this glacier is being expected. It was in 1892 also, that the same glacier had exploded, because of which, 200 people had lost their lives. Therefore, this time, measures are being taken to avoid any such incident.
