Greenpeace activists protest against oil drilling at Greenland

The campaigners of Greenpeace have forced the Scottish company Cairn Energy to stop the oil drilling operation in Greenland.

The four activists climbed up the oil rig and fasten themselves to it.

They are hanging from the rig, which is 15m above the Arctic Ocean, in tents suspended from ropes.

The campaigners have sufficient supplies to remain in the tents and halt the drilling process for several days.

If the protest continues, halting the drilling, the company will not able to complete the exploration before winters and as a result the work for the oil exploration off Greenland will stop till next year.

The police have been keeping eye on Greenpeace activists from a Danish navy ship.

The Greenpeace activists wanted to keep the energy companies away from oil drilling in Arctic after the huge oil disaster at BP's Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico.

According to one of the climbers, Sim McKenna "The drilling rig we're hanging off could spark an Arctic oil rush, one that would pose a huge threat to the climate and put this fragile environment at risk."
