French National Court Rejects Government Order of Roma’s Deportation

Nicolas Sarkozy

Defying the intentions of the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, to 'dismantle' the gypsy camps, the national court declared a decision on Tuesday that blocked the deportation of the 7 gypsies to Brazil or Romania. These gypsies have been taken out of their houses, as the Government labeled them 'illegal'.

The Roma gypsies have lately been creating an international fuss between France and Romania, with France deciding to ship off hundreds of the Roma gypsies, who have been living in France for quiet sometime, whereas Romania was criticized for not participating in the issue of protecting their of citizens.

France defended itself, at a meeting with European officials, saying that it did not breach any deportation policies or any of the European Union Rules. However, Viviane Reding, a European Union (EU) Commissioner for Justice, replied that this issue requires further investigation, as the EU's policy promised to "combat discrimination based on sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation".

On the other hand, Pierre Lellouche, the French Secretary for European Affairs, replied on these accusations of discrimination saying that the Government of Romania have not been spending the proper amount of money solving the issue, especially that it receives around $5 billion from the European Union in order to integrate the Roma minority.
