French Government under Stress due to Tough Measures

The French Government is reported to be under immense stress with President Nicolas Sarkozy's summer law and order. A lot of ministers have publicly stated their displeasure regarding the throwing out of Roma (Gypsies) and other stern moves.

Over 100 unlawful Roma camps have been shut down, subsequent to two alarming outbursts of anti-police violence in July. Other than this, roughly 1,000 people were sent back via airplane to Romania and Bulgaria.

Human rights associations, the Catholic Church and the United Nations hold different opinions on the topic. Meanwhile, the Government is in the process of coming up with a decree, according to which citizenship of recent migrates to France will be annulled, in case they were engaged in staid crimes like killing a policeman.

Defence Minister Herve Morin, who is the Chief of the small New Centre party, criticized "the policy of hate, of fear, of the scapegoat" and said that any plan, which is wholly based on police suppression was disaster-prone.

The crackdown has led to strains in Mr. Sarkozy's own Government, divulging profound disparities between security hawks and doves.

This week, Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, who was an ex-Socialist, confessed that he was "shocked" by the spotlight on people who hail from foreign countries.
