According to a new research, obesity is on the rise. It has doubled up since 1980. People in the wealthy nations have though managed to reduce their blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Obesity is a huge problem in the Asian and the African countries. In the year 2008, almost 10 percent of men and 14 percent of women in the world were estimated to be obese. In 1980, 4.8 percent of men and 7.9 percent of women were obese.
The wealthy nation people now days have the control over their blood pressure and cholesterol. The percentage drop in the other parts of the world is low as compared to the wealthy countries.
"Our results show that overweight and obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are no longer Western problems or problems of wealthy nations", said Majid Ezzati, the study's lead author who also is affiliated with the School of Public Health at Imperial College London.
The global health experts say that hypertension can be treated with medication. The obesity remains a very serious challenge for the world.
"Research is undoubtedly needed into the ... causes of the recorded trends. We need to identify, implement, and rigorously evaluate policy interventions aimed at reversing the trends, or limiting their harmful effects", the authors wrote.
