PHO calls for reduction in milk prices

A PHO in Northland has asked for the milk prices to be reduced saying that at the current high levels, it is not possible for the low-income families to afford it. And that is a right that they have.

Manaia Health PHO chief executive Chris Farrelly said while talking to media that the domestic rates of milk is already too high. Strangely, it is happening even when New Zealand is producing 15 billion liters of it every year.

He said that the argument for high prices is that the kiwi rates should match the international levels. It is nonsense since only 5 per cent of the total production is consumed internally. The rest is exported.

As for some of the solutions, he suggested that subsidies should be increased and milk should be removed from the list of the ones that fall under GST preview.

As per current information, the cheapest milk is present in Whangarei supermarket where they are charging $NZ3.65 for two litres. Comparing it to Australia where people only pay A$2, it is quite high a rate.

Survey has shown that children consumption has dropped since 1980s.
