Greenstone Recalls Two Drugs for Labeling Errors

On March 26, Greenstone LLC, a subsidiary of Pfizer Inc, made a recall on two generic drugs because of a bottle labeling mishap from a third-party manufacturer. The recall includes 100-count bottles of 10mg citalopram pills and 9-count bottles of 5mg finasteride tablets. Both of the drugs are labeled with lot number FI50150058-A, which can be found on the outside of the bottle.

The difference in the medicines, if taken and ingested, could be serious. For example, the bottles labeled as citalopram which treats depression may actually contain finasteride, which treats prostatic hypertrophy and male pattern baldness. According to Greenstone, women who are or will become pregnant should not take or even handle finasteride because some of its negative side effects include genital abnormalities in male babies. Also, people who need citalopram but don’t take it could experience a worsening of their depression.

Greenstone is asking the patients with the potentially mislabeled pills to return them to the pharmacy where they got them, and to contact their doctor immediately if there is any chance of having taken the wrong medicine.

Over the past few quarters, other companies in the pharmaceutical industry have made recalls, including Benadryl, Rolaids, Tylenol, Motrin, Simponi, Invega Sustenna, and Sudafed PE.
