‘Queen Bee Syndrome’ Restricts Women at Work

According to a new study looking at the “Queen Bee syndrome” of women in top managerial positions, it was found that as a woman, having a female boss may actually make it more difficult to get a promotion than having a male boss. The Daily Mail said that women who break through the glass ceiling make career development more difficult for the women on their team than the men they are in charge of. Additionally, a study of more than 2,000 employees in the United States showed that men who have a female boss claim they get more support and mentoring time from their bosses than their female coworkers do. A study in 2008 showed that women with a female boss had more depression, heartburn, headaches and insomnia than women who had a male boss.

Some suggest this phenomenon could partly be due to the women’s desire to fit in with their male colleagues in top management, so they overcompensate through showing more favor to their male colleagues.

Even though it might be generally expected that women would help each other out in the workplace, that is not the case according to data gathered. In fact, women can be so threatening to subordinate women when they’re in a position of high management that a British study revealed that 2/3 of women preferred to have a male boss because it was less stressful and they weren’t as prone to mood swings.
