Researchers have recently appealed that the legislative approaches should be imposed to control the Canada's obesity epidemic.

There are suggestions of taxing junk food, setting standard portion sizes and nutritional labels, and banning trans fat, by the researchers as this could help the country fight the obesity both in children as well as adults.

To support the researcher’s appeal, Dr. Mark Eisenberg of Jewish General Hospital and his co-authors wrote in Tuesday's issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal that "Obesity is expected to surpass smoking as the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality. Legislative approaches, together with environmental modifications, can be an effective means of reversing the growing problem of obesity in Canada”.

The authors have further argued for the need of a public health approach to fight obesity as its toll on life expectancy is increasing every day when combined with heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and other illnesses.

Also they showcased the advantages and disadvantages of legislative approaches on the Canada’s obesity epidemic. Some issues that were argued upon were: feasibility of the levying tax on junk food, clear definition of serving sizes to compare products more easily and reflect "real-world" portion, ban on trans fats and regulation of sodium content etc.
