An exclusive poll, the ComRes/Sunday Mirror survey reveals 62% or two out of three people want the Prime Minister David Cameron to review and reconsider reorganisation plans for the NHS that will hand over most NHS spending decisions to family doctors.
The poll findings come as a blow to Cameron, who in his speech to be delivered on the NHS in West London tomorrow, will fight back insisting change is ‘not an option’.
It seems Liberal Democrats leader Nick Clegg with his demand for substantial changes will not have an easy win. Senior Tory sources say Health Secretary Andrew Lansley’s controversial reorganisation blueprint will see GPs being given control of around £80 billion of NHS spending, permitting them to commission treatment from providers.
Shadow Health Secretary John Healey said having gone through Parliament and only needing to be passed, it was time to push the Health Bill through.
The survey shows at 39% support for Labour remains unchanged, Tories went up three points on 38 and Liberal Democrats one up on 11.
However, Saga and Age UK warn, unless the Coalition’s health reforms are enacted because of growing demand from elderly people, the NHS and social care services will collapse. The Directors of both organisation backed key parts of the reforms that aim at integrating health and social care.
Ros Altmann, Director-General of Saga, said because of growing numbers of the very old and frail, the reform should not be allowed to falter.
