US Airways and Delta Urges to Regulators to Allow Slot Swap

US Airways Group Inc. and Delta Air Lines Inc. have urged the regulators to allow them to exchange their takeoff and landing rights for dozens of flights in New York and Washington.

The deal was filed with the Federal Aviation Administration on Monday, and it calls for Delta to give US Airways 42 slot pairs at Reagan National Airport in Washington $66.5 million in cash, and the right to add another daily flight to Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2015. In this slot swap deal Delta would get 132 slot pairs at LaGuardia airport in New York. Each slot pair contains the right for one takeoff and one landing.

After the new deal, US Airways would add at least 15 new destinations and would increase peak-day departures by 20% to 230 per day. Delta would continue to fly to seven domestic hubs and other selected cities.

The deal will also provide additional access for both new entrants and airlines, which are already operating.

Meanwhile, US airways has planned to shift its flying to cities that connect to Washington and its hubs in Philadelphia, Charlotte, N. C. and Phoenix.
