U.K. Construction Index Notches Up in May, Though Bleakly

It seems that slight recovery in the crippled UK construction sector has paved way for economic growth. As per a survey, conducted by Markit Economics Ltd. and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, UK construction industry marginally grew in May, with Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) moving to 54.0 from 53.3, beating the expectations of clan of economists.

The report showed that commercial construction and homebuilding flourished in May, while civil engineering crunched back for the first time in five months, even though the overall index was seen in negative for the first quarter.

Confirming the positive impact of spending cuts imposed by UK Government on the economic growth, CIPS Chief Executive Officer, David Noble, claimed, “Aside from the unsurprising decline in civil engineering activity, the overall figures are not quite so foreboding”.

Surprisingly, a report from Accountancy firm Wilkins Kennedy had suggested that almost 1,000 companies were liquidated in the first three months of the year, contrary to the PMI report.

Following a slump in construction sector in April, spurt in new orders is reported to have played a crucial part in pushing the expansion of construction companies, though the rate of growth was avoidable enough.
