According to a report published in Nature on Sunday, the world’s biggest cancer research effort has been led from Canada and with this, Canada has yielded its most promising find. The research conducted by the International Cancer Genome Consortium is all about the four mutated genes in a fatal which is nothing else, but most common form of leukemia.
As reported by Spanish researchers, they have been able to identify the recurrent mutations of four genes which are basically the cause for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. This is basically a blood cancer and is related to bone marrow as well.
According to Thomas Hudson, President and Scientific Director of the Ontario Institute of Cancer Research and co-founder of the International Cancer Genome Consortium, this research is just the start of a much bigger project. They hope to achieve much more.
This consortium is headquartered in the MaRS building in Toronto and has a team of researchers from 13 countries. This particular research is considered as one of the most ambitious biomedical research, in which all the involved scientists aim to work in sequencing and analyzing 500 tumor genomes in each of the 50 most frequent cancers.
In this regard, Dr. Hudson said, “The diagnosis of disease is moving away from the organ towards the mutation and it’s the mutation that becomes the basis of selection therapy”.
