Following the announcement by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Health Canada has said that it will revise its guidelines for the marketing of sunscreen. US has urged the sunscreen manufacturers to carry a warning label over its products which are under UPF 15 level.

It is necessary for consumers to understand that the SPF 15 only protects from sunburns and not from cancer. There are numerous companies which are promoting their products by assuring that their product helps in preventing skin cancer and early skin aging.

Health Canada has geared up to follow the regulation of the FDA. And now onwards, the sunscreen products will carry warning which will enable the customer to understand which product will help them protecting from cancer or sun burns.

As per the FDA regulations, the sunscreen which has SPF 15 and is not "broad spectrum" will carry a warning label, "this product has been shown only to help prevent sunburn, not skin cancer or early skin aging". Moreover, under the regulation, FDA has banned sunscreen marketing claims like "waterproof" and "sweat proof" as these labels are used as gimmicks. It further says that manufacturers must phase out a four-star system which is currently used by some companies to rate UVA protection.
