There has been a current success for scientists in the UK who have started a trial with a vaccination that could be used to treat cancer in the future.
Researchers from the University of Leeds were funded by the Cancer Research UK to test doses of vaccine that contained a collection of DNA with genes from various mice. They soon discovered a success rate of 80%.
Professor Alan Melcher, co-author of the study states: “The biggest challenge in immunology is developing antigens that can target the tumor without causing harm elsewhere. By using DNA from the same part of the body as the tumor, inserted into a virus, we may be able to solve that problem”.
The way the vaccination works is the collection of DNA is inserted to the virus to attack the cancer cells. This causes the patient’s body to fight back against any more growths. Researchers also used collection of DNA from cattle to conduct studies on what looks to be a promising vaccine.
Although scientists are excited about their findings, they realize it won’t be for a while until the study can be conducted on human as to whether it will have the same affect.
