UK Study Reveals Risk of Strong IVF Drug on Babies

A large number of cases of Down's syndrome may occur lest strong dose of in-vitro fertilization (IVF), on women over the age of 35 is not being stopped. As per a recent research, excessive doses of follicle stimulating hormone
(FSH) may put eggs to large-scale genetic faults known as chromosomal abnormalities, thereby combined with the number of chromosomes in a fertilized egg may cause serious health concerns including Down's Syndrome and Edwards Syndrome.

The team, led by Prof Alan Handyside of the London Bridge Fertility, Gynecology and Genetics Centre, is of the opinion that more research needs to be done to remove all doubts for the doctors to be cautious about such sensitive treatments.

Confirming the results, Handyside claimed, “Our evidence demonstrates that, following IVF, there are multiple chromosome errors in both meiotic divisions, suggesting more extensive premature separation of single chromosomes resulting in more random segregation, which in turn results in multiple chromosome copy number changes in individual oocytes”.

The UK fertility expert, Mr. Stuart Lavery, was of the opinion that there are a large number of couples going for late families, which had faced these chromosomal abnormalities perhaps due to age, but with this recent result, it’s believed that it could be of treatment-related.

Moreover, the result of the research is believed to be used for further advanced clinical strategies to reduce the incidence of chromosome errors in older women undergoing IVF.
