New Genetically Altered Male Mosquitoes Developed to Overcome Malaria Spread

Researchers from Britain and Italy have genetically altered male mosquitoes in order to terminate the progress of malaria disease.

The UN's World Health Organization (WHO) report has revealed that around 781,000 lives were lost in 2009 due to malaria.

Researchers of Imperial College London stated that the female mosquitoes will mate with the spermless mosquitoes and would lay the unfertilized eggs which would not form into mosquito larvae.

It has also been notified that the female species Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto, which has been responsible in spreading malaria in Africa, mate only once in their lifetime and so if they mate with the new male mosquitoes, malaria can be controlled to an extent.

According to the paper published in journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 10,000 mosquito embryos were injected with zpg, which was required for the development of normal sperm. After that, 100 spermless mosquitoes were developed and the female mosquitoes mated with these new genetically altered male mosquitoes.

Lead author of the study, Entomologist Flaminia Catteruccia stated, "You [could] in principle release large numbers of sterile males over many generations and eventually all the females will have mated with the sterile males and you can really reduce the number of mosquitoes".
