St Peter's Hospital Reports No MRSA Infection for One Year

St Peter’s hospital is being applauded by one and all for being MRSA-free for one year. It has been reported by the Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation that not even a single case was reported for methicillin- resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteraemia, which reinforces the authenticity of the hygiene and infection control mechanism being installed in the hospital.

James Loginov, from patient watchdog The Surrey LINk, said: “Our volunteers across the county will encourage other hospitals to learn from the actions and activities of the Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals Trust as we all hope to see a MRSA-free Surrey”.

It has been reported that a large number of patients who visit hospitals fear about hospital-acquired infection, but owing to measures to reinforce infection control, including regular reviews of antibiotic protocols, dosing and timings to help prevent infections after surgery, and screening patients admitted to hospital for MRSA, a lot has been improved.

Moreover, the trust is working to refine its policy related to blood culture so that all the requests are being addressed by a consultant or registrar.

Though it’s a commendable achievement for the trust, any room of complacency could backfire their investment in controlling the rate of MRSA infection. With the appreciable progress made by the trust, it seems that the target to report no more than four cases over the 12 month period is quite achievable.
