Midwifery Shortage Creates Big Troubles

Since 13 years, the B. C. government is providing financial help to the midwives. But, this is for the first time that health officials claimed that due to the enormous midwives shortage, which was recently reported, all the health clinics were forced to increase the holistic practitioners demand, because the shortage, adversely affected the pregnancy care and delivery ward.

However, the reports affirmed that along with the hospital patients, B. C. mothers too remained in the doubt if they would be able to access their health services.

In the meantime, she asserted, “We are turning women away, although we are hiring new midwives in VIHA to try and meet the demand”.

Meanwhile, sharing her views about the same problem, Deborah Little, Co-Head accounted that a number of the extended recognized practices, for some time might turn the clients away but the other newer performers became able to adopt these practices.

On the other hand, Dr. Michael Klein, a retired professor from the family medicine and also a member of the Optimal Birth Program at B. C. Women’s Hospital said, “People joke that women sign up for midwifery care before conception but the huge shortage isn’t funny”.
