Smoking Trend Dips 1%

It seems people have started thinking about themselves as Canadian health authorities have witnessed 1% drop among smokers in the region.

Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey of 2010 had notified that the country’s smoking population has reduced to 17% from the preceding year’s 18%.

The survey has been analyzing the count since 1999 and 2010 has been the year with the least number of smokers. The rate was 25% in 1999 which has reduced to nearly 17% in 2010.

If to talk about the smokers between the ages of 15 and 19, the count is around 12%, a percent drop from the preceding year.

However, the provinces like Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and Alberta witnessed a little rise in the smoking trend.

Canadian Cancer Society Policy Analyst Rob Cunningham stated that the reducing trend was commendable and the efforts should be continued so that the country becomes smokers free, one fine day. Health Canada tobacco control strategy’s initiatives have really worked and will continue to make the people aware of the ill-effects.

Cunningham has also notified that the resources of the strategy have gone down from $68 million to $43 million now.

The strategy has, till now, interdicted the flavored cigarillos and has also banned the advertising related to tobacco products in the region. Recently, the cigarette manufacturers have been asked to put warning labels on their packages which have helped in making the people aware about the ill-effects of smoking.
