Dr. Ralph Steinman is No More

With hope of creating a treatment for pancreatic cancer Dr. Ralph Steinman, in the past few years have conducted numerous experiments on himself. It has been informed that Dr. Steinman was chosen to be awarded with the Nobel Prize in medicine for 2011. But, before he could experience the happiness of achieving Noble prize, he succumbed to death on Monday.

Dr. Steinman was of the view that self experiment is the highest form of medical research. He was keen of developing medicines and treatment and found it time consuming to conduct a number of experiments on the mice.

It has been informed that he was suffering from cancer and therefore, he felt that it beneficial to conduct experiments on himself rather than on mice to understand how a medicine would work over cancer.

Dr. Steinman’s contribution in the field of science has been immense. It was he who discovered dendritic cells in 1973. His finding of dendritic cells paved the way for first therapeutic cancer vaccine, Dendreon's Provenge. The vaccine is used to advanced stage of prostate cancer.

Last year, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which was already in the advanced stage and succumbed to death on Monday. Unfortunately, there is no cure available for the advanced stage of pancreatic cancer.
