The European strain of Infectious Salmon Anemia (ISA) seems to be making its way through to the British Columbia’s salmon families.
Recently, infection has been found in coho and two wild sockeye, species of salmon. Wild-salmon advocates are concerned about the matter but Mary Ellen, the spokeswoman of BC Salmon Farmers Association, has asked the advocates to relax.
Ellen further affirmed that the test, which proved infection in the Fraser River salmon species, would be again confirmed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and only then they would be able to publicize anything.
Many times, additional test proved the previous positive results wrong. But, nothing seems to satiate salmon farmers who would be hit hard by the infection. They affirmed that they rear those salmons which are taken from Atlantic but recently, the number of killings in relation to Atlantic salmon has come forth.
Walling said, "We are certainly concerned and we are anxiously waiting for the results of their findings. What we have to do is just have confidence in the CFIA and their processes”.
The agenda has taken bad shape as anti-fishing community is taking it as advantage to malign fish farmers. They were of the view that infected eggs have been introduced by the fishing community.
Walling, discarding the allegations, affirmed that over 4,700 fishing communities have been tested and none has been tested positive for the infection.
Puzzle remains unsolved as earlier, it was said that Chile salmons were not infected with ISA but now, it has been publicized that fishes and four pink salmon and two Chinooks have been found dead due to ISA. They could be termed as being infected with ISA as they internal organs were found yellow, a peculiar symptom of ISA.
