Just 1 Hour More To Reduce UK’s Rising Childhood Obesity!

Just an hour more in autumn and UK children would be able to remain fit. The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine study that got published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health has claimed that they have found an easy way to solve the problem of childhood obesity in the UK.

Researchers enrolled 325 children from Hertfordshire for their experiment, who were constantly being monitored for 817 days over the four seasons. After the aforesaid period, it was revealed that the children were most active in days, which had more hours of sunlight.

As per calculations, 22% of the children continued to play out of home, even in late evening like from 5pm to 8pm in summers but due to change in the climate, only 13% of the children continued to play outside their homes in winter.

One of the most probable reasons is that in winters, days are of shorter duration and climate gets dark and dingy by the evening. So, one solution that could be used to keep children fit is that if an hour gets ahead in winters, so daylight remains in evening, irrespective of any season.

Dr. Anna Goodman said, "The fact that kids spend more time playing outdoors and are more physically active overall on these longer days could be important at a population level for promoting fitness and preventing child obesity".

The suggestion for increasing an hour has been put forth on the tables of the House of Commons and would be presented by Conservative MP Rebecca Harris.

Harris affirmed this method would not only keep childhood obesity in control, but an extra hour would mean power bill saving, fewer road accidents, which happened due to darkness and it would also be good point to promote tourism.

There are some, who find it to be a baseless idea and one of them is Professor Paul Gately, owner of MoreLife, weight management organization.
