GM Finds Brake Pads Missing, Recalls 4,296 Sonics

General Motors has recently noticed, during a warranty service on a Sonic (part of a car rental fleet), that the company has mistakenly not installed a brake pad in the model. After finding about the missing part, GM on Friday announced that the company will soon recall approximately 4,300 numbers of its 2012 Chevrolet Sonics that the company has manufactures to thoroughly check the presence of the brake pads in all the models.

Meanwhile, the GM has confirmed that the chances of missing part are expected to be very less and in some models only based upon their confirmation of fortunately not receiving and news of crashes or injuries due to the issue.

The absence of a brake pad takes longer to get hold of the piece and would be requiring longer stopping distance, worst is that the missing brake pads can also contribute to a crash.

The recall by GM will be including all the 4,296 Sonics that have been manufactured by the company between June 2 and November 21, 2011 and have been sold in the US. Also, the majority of affected models have been manufactures by the automaker's Orion Township assembly plant, confirms the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website.

The dealers have been given the responsibility by the company to thoroughly inspect the front brakes for any missing of inner or outer pads. Also, they will be installing new pads in case of finding a missing.

“It's totally unacceptable for something like this to escape an assembly plant these days”, said Mr. David Sullivan, an automotive product analyst with AutoPacific Group. “GM has a lot to prove with the Sonic, with trying to shake the stigma of the less-than-stellar Aveo. A recall for missing brake pads doesn't help”, he added.
