Bupa Condemned for ‘Disgraceful’ Cost-cutting

As per recent information, it has been revealed that the management of a care home by Bupa wherein an aged resident faced repeated and harsh disregards was somewhat “quite disgraceful”. The statements were made recently by a judge during the hearing of a case.

The company was, however, condemned following an incident in which the manager of its Croxteth-based Stonedale Lodge home was provided with a suspension of jail sentence for a period of eight months over allegations of an intentional neglect of a woman, 90-year-old dementia patient, during her stay there in 2010.

Liverpool Crown Court was informed that Joyce Farrow was frequently left dehydrated and unclean, and she even had her feet aching due to sores she picked up while crawling all over after the care home workers for seeking assistance. She fell out of her bed repeatedly.

Later Mrs. Farrow was admitted to a nearby hospital, where she left the world full of pain for, perhaps, a better one. It was also discovered during the course of the inquest that her sad demise was not associated with any sort of neglect faced by her at Stonedale Lodge.

The court was also informed that Bupa subjected the manager, Karen Southern, to intense pressure for filling up beds and for keeping the costs low.

Bupa was reportedly having a policy in relation to “naming and shaming” the managers who made use of staffing agencies for the sake of filling staff shortages.

While expressing his opinion in this regard, along with briefing the proceedings of the court, Judge Mark Brown claimed: “Bupa hold them out as being the leading UK providers of dementia care, and as the home manger you were responsible for the care and well being of residents”.
