A group of researchers from the University of Reading has found that daily glass of beetroot juice might prove helpful in lowering blood pressure, a new report says. The study has been recently study published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

It has been found by previous studies that consumption of 500 ml of beetroot juice lowers blood pressure rate within 24 hours. Considering the same, the researchers had carried out a survey, Beetroot juice, beetroot enriched bread and blood pressure, which was focused at finding out if intake of smaller amounts of beetroot juice was also helpful.

The researchers majorly focused at revealing the way to lower down blood pressure as it has been found to be a leading cause of deaths in the UK. The reason behind the same is that increase in blood pressure rate leads to raised risk of getting strokes or heart attacks in a later life.

Moving on with their aim, they discovered that 100g of beetroot juice, if consumed a day, could also reduce blood pressure, either in a bout of 0 to 4 hours or in the long term of 0 to 13 hours. Along with the same, the team’s study was also aimed to find if there was a difference in the effect if betalains were present in beetroots.

It was found by the researchers that absence of betalain, which is a pigment responsible for the deep red colour of beetroot, did not cause any difference in the impact. Juice of white as well as red beetroot had the same effect.

The team told that beetroot contains high nitrate content, the chemical which when ingested in the body, becomes nitric oxide. Since nitric oxide is helpful in increases blood flow, therefore beetroot juice eventually keeps blood pressure (BP) low.
