Solar energy has gathered a lot of attention after the non-renewable resources started to become scarce. Till date it has been under use in cooking, heating water and even converting solar energy into electricity. The energy of the sun which is found in abundance and free of cost is one of the most viable aspects of renewable energy.
But the sage of the solar energy was really expensive and the solar panels that are used to convert the solar energy cost a lot for input. Also their performance is not up to the mark as a lot of energy gets wasted. Now there is an intensive research that has been going on to find out way of improving the performance of solar photovoltaic cells and bringing down there cost.
A team of MIT student have a taken the tasks to come up with an innovative design that would fulfill their aim of reducing cost and increasing the performance. Till date solar panels could only be put flat on the roof surface or on a movable car in a two dimensional surface. But the researchers are taking it to a next level by designing cubes or towers that extend the solar cells upward in three-dimensional configurations. What is a lot peculiar is the output that comes out of such design is much larger than the conventional flat panels. The difference between the performances is almost 20 times having same base area.
This is a great achievement as along with increased output, the cost would also come down as very few panels would be required to achieve the same goal. The concept that they have created might one day become an important part in the future of photovoltaic.
A recent study has suggested that graphene is strongest material in the world even when it is defected. The findings are contrary to the previous studies, which suggest that the graphene with defects is comparatively weaker than graphene in perfect lattice.
In the new research, it emerged that even when small crystalline grains are...
