Environmental Group All Set To Examine Impact of North Sea Platform Gas Leak

In a recent report, it has been confirmed that a team of experts would be examining the damage posed after a gas leak from an offshore platform. The newly formed Environment Group, chaired by Marine Scotland, would probe the potential consequences of the leak from Total's Elgin platform. In consequent to the same, work would be started today itself by Marine Research Vessel Alba na Mara.

"The environmental risk continues to be assessed as minimal at this stage. However, the Scottish Government remains vigilant and we are carefully monitoring the situation and any developments”, said Scottish Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead, who further confirmed that they are in constant touch with both Total and the UK Government.

It was further reported that the team has visited the platform yesterday and spent as many as four hours there for the installation, around 150 miles off Aberdeen, which would help them track the dire effects of the leak.

It was told that as much as 200,000 cubic metres of gas is escaping from the platform each day, which further leak into the air, thereby escalating the risk of pollution. As much as a million pounds a day is lost due to the same, and that’s why it has become all the more imperative that this problem is sorted out soon.
