‘The Million-Dollar Baby’ Puts Australian Family Under $1M Medical Bill

A case of little Gracee Broom has been getting the attention of one and all as she is being called as "the million-dollar baby”. She was born on Feb. 12 in the US, a lot earlier than expected, which left the family and others in shock. The fact that she was born in America has put the family into a difficult situation with the medical bills increasing with every single day.

The couple was on a trip to Los Angeles, when expecting Sonja Broom became unwell. In no time, she felt excruciating pain while they were on a three-day cruise and she was rushed to a hospital after the reaching the mainland. Though the parents have paid AU $10,000, the final bill stands at AU $300,000. And it would increase in the time to come.

The family as of now is entitled to pay as much as over AU $1 million (US $1.03m), which is why she is being touted as the million dollar baby. While the Insurance giant AAMI has made it clear that they won’t be paying the medical bill as the mother of the baby, Sonja Broom, was pregnant before the time she signed the cover.

The baby would not be able to travel as long as she didn’t have a visa, and there are fair chances that it would take some more months for the baby to get the same, as she is yet not an Australian citizen. The mother is staying with her daughter at the Florida Hospital for Children, and it is believed that the baby is not fit enough to travel to Australia before July.

The mother is enjoying with her little girl who weighed 27 ounces (765g) at the time of birth, but now she is some 3.5 pounds. As of now, Husband Brett would have to go back to his home to Brisbane for his other kids who are under the care of their grandparents.
