UK Government May Allow Tobacco Plain Packaging, Announces Review

It seems that it would take some time before plain packaging of tobacco products would be legalized in the UK. A review over the same is told to have been official given a green signal by the government, after the Australian Government legalized it in November last year.

While smoking is no more a local issue and countries across the world are battling with it in their own way and this is what has made the governments of countries to come forward and have an open discussion over the same. after getting impressed from the stance taken by the Australian government which despite facing criticism from tobacco industry has made plain packaging a law, the British government has made up its mind to give the law a serious thought, and if proved apt for British, it may also be legalized in future.

“We don’t work in partnership with the tobacco companies because we are trying to arrive at a point where they have no business in this country”, said Health secretary for the UK Government, Andrew Lansley, in response to the issue.

With as many 100,000 deaths a year in the UK, it had become all the more imperative that some sort of stern measure is being tried out to deal with the glaring health concern. In response to the same, Tobacco giant Philip Morris International has made it clear that such move can instigate development of bogus cigarettes in the market, which can make things all the more worst for the government to manage.

However, anti-smoking charity Ash Scotland has welcomed the move, thereby claiming that removing branding would certainly make tobacco a hell lot of less glamorized.

No doubt that packaging plays an important role in tobacco sales in Australia, will the plain packaging be able to change anything in terms of smoking rate would be worth seeing.
