There has been an ever growing debate on the issue of healthy food. People often think or have a presumption that healthy foods are high-priced than their counterpart fast food. But a new study from the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service has diminished that by stating that healthy food is in fact affordable.
It also contradicts some of the previous studies that state that eating junk food is cheaper than eating healthy food. Andrea Carlson, lead author for the USDA study highlights the reason behind this contraction. According to her, the researchers that conducted earlier studies measured cost-effectiveness which skewed the results.
In order to come up with a conclusive figure, Carlson along with her team analyzed nearly 4,440 foods. All of these food items were examined in accordance to price per calories, price per edible gram and price per average portion. The figures that came out stated that when the researchers used the price per calories analysis, fruits and vegetables appeared more expensive. But when the other two categories were used the table was turned in the favor of healthy foods. This give a larger insight in the wrong presumption that people had and it would surely make more people opt for healthy foods.
