There have been over 900 to 1,000 complaints that have been received by the US Food and Drug Administration since November, of dogs getting illness which included some fatalities too. The onus of these deaths and illnesses is being put on chicken jerky treats from China.

There have been earlier reports which have revealed that three main brands of chicken jerky treats appeared to be connected with the mysterious illnesses among dogs. These are Canyon Creek Ranch or Waggin' Train jerky treats or tenders, produce by Nestle Purina PetCare Co., and Milo's Kitchen Home-style Dog Treats, made by Del Monte Corp.

However, both the manufacturers have been stern on their stance that their products are safe and the illnesses that are in question are not related in any kind to the jerky treats. Although the FDA has been conducting chemical and microbiological tests, it still has to find a root cause for such a high number of cases regard dog illness and death. However, blood test of some of the stricken animals suggests kidney failure and urine samples have indicated Fanconi syndrome. Unless some plausible evidence comes out linking both, FDA can’t issue a recall on its own.
