Researchers Find Efficient Treatment for Tinnitus

A report published recently in The Lancet medical journal has unveiled that Tinnitus, an ear disease, is now curable. However, some treatments have been available since long, none works effectively.

Tinnitus is a disease linked to ringing in the ears. It is believed that the onset of the disease is a consequence of over-active nerve cells within the hearing area of the brain.

It has been told by a team of surveyors, who conducted a review in The Netherlands that the new multidisciplinary approach has shown a 33% improved result as compared to standard counselling therapy.

The team had recruited a total of nearly 500 adults, suffering from tinnitus. Of all of them, some 245 were given a combination of psychological training and audio therapy, while others were referred for standard counselling at a hearing clinic.

It was noted that those getting the former one, were on the way of defeating problems after 12 months caused by severe tinnitus. However, the other group rarely showed any improvement.

The multidisciplinary therapy includes focusing on the sound and not ignoring the same, the researchers affirmed. Also, it creates some sounds that could mask the existing sounds of ringing. The therapy is cost-effective as well as more beneficial, the report concludes.
