A group of researchers from Maastricht University has told after its recent study, published in the The Lancet, of a new therapy that it is more effective for treating tinnitus than other standard therapies, a report reveals.
It has been found by the researchers that tinnitus can be cured by adding psychological techniques to standard treatments. The team says that patients suffering hearing ringing, buzzing or whistling noises inside the head can be benefitted with a combination of recording the sounds and counseling them.
Also, as per the new therapy, patients are also made to hear a soothing sound of the sea. The team’s claims are based on evidence from the study on 492 patients. It was noted that patients who were given the treatment of cognitive behavioural therapy along with masking the ringing technique had shown more improvements in their condition after a year.
While masking is done by creating a competing sound at the same frequency, which helps in relieving stress, the behavioural therapy includes discussion of problems, which helps patients to take the illness differently.
"The results are highly relevant for clinical practice because best practice for tinnitus has not been defined and current treatment strategies are fragmented and costly", the team says.
