A team of scientists has now been hoping to see the development of a new contraceptive pill for men, says a recent report published in the journal PLos Genetics.
The team from the Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh had conducted a study on mice to find out the causes of infertility in males.
For the same, the team followed the procedure of altering the genetic code of mice. Mutations responsible for infertility in men were tracked by the team and it was found that a particular gene plays a very important role in sperm production during final stages.
The gene dubbed Katnal1 was known to be vital as its absence hampers sperm development and thus the body disposes of them. It has been found that the gene holds blueprints for a protein that is needed by sperm making cells.
Scottish scientists have been claiming that a drug that helps in interruption of Katnal1 could be a possible contraceptive treatment.
While the study has proved the same in mice only, the team hopes to test the same in humans. Also, similar results could help in a drug to stop sperm developing in them and that too, without lasting damage.
