Scientists Improve Anti-Cancer Drug by Adding Magnet

A report published in the journal Inorganica Chimica Acta has revealed that a group of researchers, for a fast and improved treatment strategy, has yet again made some change in the way a drug delivers medicine in the body.

It has been found that the anti-cancer drug Cisplatin has been filled with an iron core now to obtain better results. The nanoparticles have been synthesized by reducing gold onto its surface followed by a co-precipitation method.

Nonetheless, the drug treats solid tumours effectively, but, it leaves patients with severe side effects and rapid development of drug resistance.

It is being said by the team from the University of Sydney that the gold-coated iron oxide nanoparticles inserted would use their external magnetic fields and target the tumour more actively. The team says that the process makes the drug magnetic.

The report has further found that the nanoparticles can be dragged by magnets to specific regions in the body and cell growth is hampered in those areas.

“This discovery means we can potentially direct exactly where in the human body a drug goes. We can move it to the desired cancer tumour site using powerful magnetic fields”, says Dr Nial White, a Senior Lecturer from the Faculty of Pharmacy.
