Bowel Cancer Awareness Week in Australia

Bowel Cancer Awareness Week in Australia

A report has unveiled recently that Bowel Cancer Awareness Week is being celebrated in Australia, which would start from Sunday, June 3 ending June 9.

As part of the week, Victorians would be made aware about the risks and causes of bowel cancer. They would also be taught about what measures can be taken to treat the same.

It has been revealed that a large number of Australians suffer from the disease each year. The report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has shown that almost 17,188 people had become the victims of the cancer from 2004 to 2008.

While in case of early detection, the illness can be treated successfully, says chief executive Julien Wiggens of BCA, people often fail to visit their GPs. He has also affirmed that the same happens even in presence of screening tests due to a feeling of embarrassment in patients.

It has been told that the cancer is the result of unhealthy diet and lifestyle factors. And according to a research, early detection by Australia's National Bowel Cancer Screening Program is only largely beneficial.

Also, Bowel Cancer Australia suggests young people to consult a doctor in case of any symptom, and people in their 50s and over to go for a bowel cancer test every two years.
