Diabetes Drug Found To Be Increasing Bladder Cancer Risk

Findings in a recent research have proposed that a very common drug for diabetes can tend to increase chances of bladder cancer.

It has been emphasized that type 2 diabetic patients, who have been taking the medicine pioglitazone everyday for more than two years consecutively are at double the risk of development of the cancer.

Researchers based in Canada, examined records of more than 115,000 people in UK, who were prescribed the drug over an 11-year period. It was discovered that an estimated 137 extra cases of bladder cancer were administered per 100,000 people-years.

Statistical reports suggest that 470 patients were diagnosed with bladder cancer during the average 4.6 years of follow-up, a rate of 89 per 100,000 person years. The rate in the general UK population aged at least 65 is 73 per
100,000 person years.

Further, it was notified that patients, who had ever consumed the drug, were at an 83% risk of bladder cancer, which accounted for 74 per 100,000 person-years.

And in case, patients were taking it for two years or more, the rate corresponded to 88 per 100,000 person-years and in case, people had taken 28,000 mg or more, then the rate corresponded to 137 per 100,000 person-years.
