Soon Progress of Cancer Treatment to Depend on Simple Blood Test

Findings in a recent research proposed that soon progress of cancer treatment could be administered using a simple blood test. It has been proposed that the test will help provide a see through whether treatment deployed to treat the tumor is working or not.

The developers of the blood test, British researchers, have claimed that the test can monitor progress of the tumor and it doesn’t even need a surgery or scan.

The researchers explained that the test is based on the technique of gene sequencing, which helps determine the genetic code of the patients, further, providing a detailed look at the tiny pieces of DNA that cancer tumors shed in the blood. These pieces cannot be seen through any other screening method.

During the course of their research, these scientists analyzed blood samples of 20 out of 38 patients, diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer, to detect the deadly mutation. The samples were taken either before, during or after chemotherapy sessions.

After a time of 16 months, the researchers were able to chart out how different women responded to different treatments they were subjected to.

Dr. Nitzan Rosenfeld, who led the study at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute, said: "This type of blood test has the potential to revolutionize the way we diagnose and treat cancer”.
