High-Protein Diet Has No Adverse Effect on Kidneys

A new research, published recently in the "Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology", conducted by a team of surveyors at the American Medical Association has revealed that kidneys are not affected by consuming low carbohydrate diets.

While low-carb/ high-protein diets have been known for long, these were previously believed to be harmful for kidneys of eaters. It was thought that it has negative impact on the fluid and electrolyte balance also.

The association had even released a data some time ago that the Atkins diet is extremely harmful. However, the new study proposes no such harms, as per the report.

The team included some hundreds of obese participants in the study, who were on diet. Some of the participants were given to have a low-carb, high-protein diet for a period of two years. It has been found out that there was no difference in the functioning of kidneys of those on protein rich diets and those on low-fat diets.

“We did not find that a high-protein diet led to any kidney-related problems like lower filtration rates, kidney stones or problems with blood electrolytes”, says Friedman and his colleagues.
