Rehabilitation Experiment Witnesses Paralyzed Rats Walking Again

It seems that there is good news for those who suffer from spinal cord injuries as there are reports that indicate that a team of Swiss scientists has managed to restore the mobility of rats who were earlier suffering from spinal cord injuries. It was made possible after weeks of intensive training and rehabilitation.

It was made possible after the efforts of a team led by Gregoire Courtine and another team from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne. It was told that the trail contained electrical and chemical stimulation of the rats’ brains and spines so that the control over muscles can be improved.

“Our rats have become athletes when just weeks before they were completely paralysed. I am talking about 100% recuperation of voluntary movement”, said Dr Gregoire Courtine of the Ecole Poytechnique Federale de Lausanne.

Earlier, it was believed that it would be next to impossible to do the same but the efforts from the team made it very much possible. Despite of the same, it has yet not been unveiled if it can be used for humans too or not.

It is expected that a lot would be made possible after the phase-two trials which are expected to start in a year or two at Balgrist University Hospital Spinal Cord Injury Centre in Zurich, Switzerland.
