A Relay for Life as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, which is aiming at improving cancer patients’ lives, was organized at DeKalb High School at 6 p. m. Saturday.

It has been found that the relay is organized each year since sixteen years and like every year, DeKalb County had participated in it.

The American Cancer Society is aimed at raising funds for sufferers and in memory of those who lost their lives. It has been told that out of the money, 72 cents are invested for more research into the illness and for preventative and early-detection cancer programs and services. Also, 22 cents are spent on community events and fundraisers, while the remaining 6 cents are used for general expenses.

It has been found that around 400 people participated in the event this year, including Keri Nelson, who took part as captain for team “Miles for Mike”. It is being said that he always participates for his deceased friend, who was an esophageal cancer patient.

Each year, the event has been able to raise more than $1.5 million for the noble cause. “I think the most rewarding part of it for me is to see people walk; to see the length of time of the survivors that are walking”, said Terri Mann-Lamb, a member of team “Rae of Sunshine”.
