There are very few women who have been able to abide the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The advice says that the new mothers should only feed breast milk to their babies till the child gets six months old.

Until the child gets six months old, he should not be given any other solid or liquid. However, not many US mothers have been able to fulfill the condition. Recently, a survey was published in the journal Pediatrics, which has revealed that two-thirds of new US women have been unable to breast feed their children.

Another survey being carried out by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has revealed that mothers always try to find out alternatives for breast feeding for their children. The report named as Baby-Friendly Hospital Practices and Meeting Exclusive Breastfeeding Intention has revealed that 85% of pregnant women are expecting to breast feed their children till three months.

The authors of the report were of the view that it is important pregnant women should be given lessons, so that they breast feed their children for a long time. It should be noted that mothers, who are obese and smokers, are less likely to follow the recommendation.
