In recent past, there has been slew of reports that indicated that over diagnosis is actually making things all the more serious for patients and that’s what has caused a debate in the medical community as well.
“A burgeoning scientific literature is fueling public concerns that too many people are being overdosed, over treated, and over diagnosed”, said Australian journalist and academic researcher Ray Moynihan, Australian epidemiologist Jenny Doust, and Dr. David Henry, CEO of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences in Toronto, Canada. It is believed that some or the other way, technology is pushing the need for diagnosing patients again and again, with minute infections being caught under scanner.
On one side, it is being claimed that there is need for screenings to be done to identify serious disease before time just like in the case of cancers, on the other side, potential side effects of the same are being shown now. There is no doubt that at times, people are being overdosed, over treated and over diagnosed and that’s what could make things serious for them in long term.
There is need for this matter to be resolved soon so that the potential side effects of over diagnosing are being addressed within safe time. An international conference on “Preventing Overdiagnosis” is expected to take place in the year 2013 so that this issue is being openly discussed.
